I put this piece together fairly quickly since I wanted to get back to painting after my weekend's house guest departed. I wanted the composition to subtly climb up the paper to help draw the eye toward the african violet flowers. I wanted the flowers to have a bit more of a luminescent quality even though the real plant doesn't seem to exhibit this characteristic. The original is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint, Daniel Smith watercolor paint, and Winsor & Newton watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The interaction between the coarse grained paper and the paints helped create interesting textures in both the background and leaves of the piece.
